Centru (Centre) Region is an important contributor to Romania’s economy, accounting for 11.3% of the country’s GDP and ranking 3rd at national level. The development of the circular bioeconomy (CBE) in the region will address challenges such as the need for improved waste management and recycling, remediation of polluted areas, the integration of small farmers into the CBE, and the development of educational programs for the population. The region has great potential both for traditional agriculture and food industry, with old landraces and animal breeds still being kept in rural areas, traditional processing of bio-resources and industrial based value chains as well. However, the development of CBE in the region has been hindered by poverty, which is prevalent in rural areas, especially in protected areas where conservation plans do not consider the needs of rural communities. RIBES will address these challenges and promote sustainable CBE in the region through tailored solutions that prioritize societal impact.
