RIBES Objectives

The RIBES project is dedicated to transforming the bio-based innovation landscape in Europe, particularly in regions lagging behind in technological and social advancements. RIBES objectives are designed to foster sustainable development, enhance governance, and drive economic and social innovation. Here’s what the project aims to achieve:

Establish Innovative Governance Models

Develop and implement innovative governance frameworks to improve decision-making processes.

Enhance social engagement and foster community-led innovation.

01

Strengthen Collaboration Networks

Build robust networks among stakeholders to ensure informed decisions.

Foster strong science-policy interfaces to support sustainable development goals.

02

Promote Social Innovation

Increase the capacity for social innovation within bio-based sectors, focusing on local governance and social inclusion.

Empower rural and peri-urban communities through better governance and innovative practices.

03

Foster Local-Scale Innovation

Encourage citizen engagement and support social enterprises that drive local innovation.

Create opportunities for rural populations to benefit from bio-based innovations.

04

Accelerate Regional Transformation

Drive economic and social transformation in nine European regions with low innovation capacities.

Promote the adoption of bio-based innovation models at both national and international levels.

05

Enhance Sustainability and Circular Economy

Transition from a linear fossil-based economy to resource-efficient, circular bio-based systems.

Operate within safe planetary boundaries to ensure long-term sustainability.

06

RIBES Methodology

RIBES builds on the principle of co-creation, involving stakeholders early and actively in designing and implementing policies and services. This bottom-up approach leverages local knowledge and expertise to develop context-specific, inclusive, and sustainable solutions. Based on this governance assessment, RIBES will identify strengths and weaknesses in existing schemes, leading to policy recommendations for enhanced effectiveness and robustness.

To do so, RIBES will follow the following steps:

1. Establish multi-actor Transformative Forums (MTFs) to drive cooperation among local actors that function as platforms for open innovation. These forums will engage a diverse range of regional stakeholders in collaborative governance and innovation processes.

2. Engage regional actors in co-creating governance models and practices that overcome local barriers and seize opportunities. These schemes will be tested in nine pilot regions, with the goal of replication in similar regions across the EU.

3. Develop the RIBES Toolkit that will include practical tools for developing collaborative circular bioeconomy governance models, policy monitoring systems, and environmental protection plans. It will help regional actors enhance their capacity to create innovative business models and adopt good governance practices.

4.  Focus on social sustainability by empowering all actors to participate equally. Address regional needs and engage vulnerable groups, integrating social innovation into business models while providing training, capacity building, and business support to accelerate small-scale circular and bio-based enterprises.
